How often should you change cat litter?

Cats are quite finicky creatures and very particular about their toiletings habits, so it's important to keep their litter trays clean and hygienic.

If you're a new cat owner, it's important to know that changing your cat's litter tray is important to their health and well-being.

But how often should you change your cat's litter? We have put together a comprehensive guide to help you schedule your cat's litter change.

Read our cat litter tray tips below...

How often should you change cat litter?

There are a number of factors to consider when it comes to how regularly you change your cat's litter. It can depend on how many cats you have and the type of litter you are using.

With our CJ's cat litter in tow, which is a non-clumping litter, a single cat using the tray will need it changing at least twice a week.

If multiple cats are using the litter tray, the litter will need changing more frequently. However, bear in mind that cats do not like sharing litter trays, so if you have multiple cats, you should consider having one tray per cat.

Signs it's time to change the litter

Whilst you might have a schedule for cleaning your cat's litter, there are clear signs that it's time to change.

An obvious one that there is a persistent odour, even after scooping. The litter may also appear wet or heavily soiled.

Another sign that you need to change your cat litter is that they may begin to urinate outside of their litter tray. Additionally, visible waste buildup won't be easily removed by scooping.

Tips for maintaining a clean litter box

To maintain a clean and hygienic litter box, it is important to use a high-quality litter that controls odours. Our CJ's cat litter benefits from a fresh fragrance of natural pine and absorbs well to ensure a fresh space for you and your pet.

Ensure that your cat litter is about two inches deep to allow for proper absorption, however consider that some long-haired cats prefer less litter and a smooth surface.

It is recommended that your cat litter tray is kept in a well-ventilated area, this will minimise any odours and a cat litter mat will reduce tracking.
